The Senior Tax Associate will report to, work directly with, and assist, the Director of Tax. The Senior Tax Associate plays a pivotal role in managing and optimizing the tax function and strategies of our real estate and private equity investments. This position requires a seasoned professional with a strong background in tax accounting, particularly within the private equity and real estate sectors. This individual will ensure compliance with tax laws & regulations, provide strategic tax planning, and support the tax reporting processes for the company.
What you have already achieved: (Requirements)
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance, or related discipline.
- Prove work experience as a Tax Accountant or similar role.
- 3+ years of tax experience with additional expertise in partnership taxation and REITs preferred.
- Partnership capital account maintenance & modeling 704(c) layers and 743/734 step ups experience is a plus.
- Background knowledge of real estate accounting and taxation of rental estate entities.
- Quarterly REIT testing experience is a plus.
- Detail-oriented with a commitment to accuracy and meeting deadlines.
- Possesses a strong work ethic, personal and professional integrity, and a positive attitude.
- Experience with Google Suite is a plus.
What you are great at: (Responsibilities)
- Ensure timely compliance with 1099 and K-1 deadlines.
- Coordinating and working closely with the corporate and property management controllers, other accountants and DLP personnel in compiling information and documentation necessary for creating the tax packages for all DLP entities.
- Preparation of tax packages and review of federal and state tax returns for approximately 200 real estate Special Purpose Entities (SPE’s), Funds, REITs, holding companies, and corporate operating companies.
- Fulfilling requests for information and tax returns from various parties (i.e. lenders, investors, management).
- Maintaining the tax basis financials within AppFolio accounting software.
- Calculation and submit payments of all non resident withholding requirements.
- Providing estimates and projections of taxes due, monitoring required tax payments, calculating effects of what-if tax advantaged strategies, and furnishing ad-hoc analysis of taxes and taxable income.
- Responsible for preparing quarterly REIT tests for equity and mortgage REITs and coordinating with 3rd party tax advisors on their review and sign-off.
- Responsible for preparing earnings & profit calculations for REIT entities.
- Respond to inquiries, notices, and requests from various tax authorities and regulators.
- Maintain appropriate record keeping, documentation, and filing systems to substantiate tax returns and financial statement audits.
- Research and advise on tax efficient strategies with complex ownership structures (new and existing).
- Respond to inquiries from investors regarding their K-1s.
- Research tax issues and recommend resolutions for those issues.
